    Baekjung(白中)
Baekjung refers to Buddhist All Spirits Day, alternatively called Ullambana Festival. Baekjung usually falls on the 15th of the seventh month in the lunar calendar. Dongguk sesigi(東國歲時記: A Record of Seasonal Customs in Korea) describes that "the festival day is derived from the Ullambanapatra Sutra (盂蘭經 or 盂蘭盆經) in which his disciple Maudgalyayana is represented as having offered the whole priesthood the foods of the five tastes and fruit of all kinds contained in a vessel()." On the festival day the monks hold a ritual for soothing the tormented ghost of deceased ancestors, so that the day is called the Dead Souls Day(亡魂日). Yeoryang sesigi(洌陽歲時記: Records of Seasonal Festivities around the Capital) also states, "On Baekjung, also called Jungwon(中元), they offered the Buddha a hundred kinds of flowers and fruits and this is why it is named the Day of One Hundred Kinds(百種)." Besides, the date of the festival concurs with the closing day of the Summer Retreat(three-month intensive Seon practice period) with the Seon monks participating in a ceremony of repentance(自恣). On the day of regret, monks make an admission to the public and from this custom another word, Baekjung(白衆: confessing oneself to the public) was originated. The Ullambana Festival, according to the Ullambanapatra Sutra(盂蘭經), is a day for the disciples of the Buddha to perform filial duties and to present the Buddha and monks with elaborate offerings filled in the pot() of Ullabana(盂蘭) - by some bun(: a vessel) is regarded as a Chinese word, not part of the transliteration. The Sanskrit ullambana may be another form of lambana or avalamba, 'hanging down,' 'depending,' 'support' ; it is interpreted as 'to hang upside down,' or 'to be in suspense,' referring to extreme suffering in purgatory; but there is a suggestion of the dependence of the dead on the living. According to the Complete Chronicle of the Buddha and Patriarchs(佛祖統紀), China first held the ceremony of Ullambana at the reign of Emperor Wu of the Liang dynasty(梁武帝). Korea is said to have first started the ceremony in 1056 when King Munjong of the Goryeo Dynasty ruled. According to the above-mentioned sutra, the offering done this day, in particular, is called Hyosun gongyang(孝順供養: the filial offering) which first began by the Honored One Maudgalyayana who had been to purgatory to relieve his mother's sufferings. The meaning of the offering done at the earlier days has changed into the Ullanbana Ceremony in which a ritual guiding the spirits of dead parents is held.
